Laufend Erinnern
Walk of remembrance

This short, but interesting walk starts at U-Bahn Bayerischer Platz and ends at the beautiful Viktoria_luise-Platz. Try to come out of the southern (Grunewald) exit.

In the 1920s this district was home to wealthier Berliners, including many Jews (Albert Einstein lived here for a while). The Nazi regime and the deportations following the Wannsee Conference brutally depleted the population. From the 16 000 original Jewish inhabitants, 6 000 were deported, the rest emigrated.

A very inventive project reminds us of this terrible past. 80 signs have been placed on lamp-posts throughout the district. On one side of each sign there is an image and on the other side there is some German from the Nazi period.

War damage destroyed 60% of the quarter. Post war buildings have plugged the gaps, providing an intense contrast to the old luxurious buildings that survived and which have now mostly been renovated. This is a high rent district.

Touch the images for an English translation of the German from the Nazi period.
