Stolpersteine
Stumbling stones
The artist Gunter Demnig remembers
the victims of the Nazi period by inserting a memorial
plaque into the pavement in front of their last home.
He has fitted over 12 500 stones in 277 towns in
Germany, Austria and Hungary. Dennig says, “Someone is
only forgotten when their name is forgotten”.
Schools or relatives for example investigate people who
were deported or persecuted during the Nazi regime.
Demnig then makes a concrete 10 cm cube, which he
covers with a sheet of brass. Then he adds “Hier
wohnte” (Here lived), their name, their year of birth
and their fate. The Stolperstein is then fitted into
the pavement in front of the victim’s last home.
You will find Stolpersteine all over Berlin.
